Issue Network Management Card reports that a graceful shutdown has been commanded from serial port 0. Examples of these variations are listed below: AP with v3. Initiated from Serial Port 0. Initiated by Control Console user 'apc' from This event can also occur within the UPS itself.
Another example is when a UPS has a fault condition and goes into failure bypass where bypass is available. As a result, the battery will discharge over time.Lg sl10yg vs sk10y
When the battery hits a low battery condition, the UPS wants to shutdown the UPS's loads as it cannot maintain failure bypass forever a minimum battery voltage is required to keep the logic power supply on for the on-line Smart-UPS. Resolution It is suggested the user review the possible causes as explained above in an effort to determine if an accessory, such as a PowerView display generated the event by user command or if there was a particular fault or failure condition the UPS experienced, in which it'd try to signal to PowerChute clients that they should shutdown to prevent the load from turning off prematurely.
If you require further explanation or assistance, please provide the log files for your Network Management Card based on the instructions in knowledge base ID FA to your local technical support.
Without the software, your computer will be completely unaware that the power interruption has occurred and will run right until the last second before it gets powered down hard when the battery runs out. The agent software turns your dumb battery backup into a smart battery backup that can communicate with your computer and coordinate activities: the most important of which is shutting down or hibernating gracefully when the battery is sufficiently depleted but before there is a risk the shutdown will terminate prematurely and damage the computer.
The first order of business is installing the software. Installation is a straight forward, click-to-accept-EULA and installation directory affair: no special configuration needed. Double check that the devices plugged into your UPS unit are plugged into the right electrical outlets. The majority of UPS units have a bank of battery-supported outlets and a bank of surge-protected but not battery-supported outlets.
Double check that critical computer components such as your computer tower and primary monitor are plugged into the battery-supported outlets. This dashboard view is a great way to check in on the overall health of your UPS unit.
While the first tab gives you a current overview, the second tab gives you a historical view.Opel start wiring diagram
As a side note, the recording is all software based, not hardware based in the UPS unit. If you just installed the software, it will not show you issues that cropped up while the UPS unit was active but not linked to the agent software.
Next stop: the configuration menu. Here we can set up a few handy little extras. The first tab offers one of the handiest bonus tools you get with the UPS unit: power scheduling.
At first glance, this seems like a redundant tool. The cool part about using the UPS agent tool instead of the Windows tool, however, is that not only will it shutdown your computer but it will also shut down all the peripherals attached to the UPS unit. With the agent scheduling tool you can have the UPS unit do it for you.
The notification tab offers simple notification toggles, including the ability to toggle software-based alerts your computer speakers will produce the sound and hardware-based alerts the speaker inside the actual UPS unit will produce the sound. While alarms are handy, if you live somewhere with frequent brown outs or the like, you may wish to disable the hardware-based alarm especially if your computer is in or near your bedroom. In the Runtime tab, you can optimize your UPS usage for extended runtime or battery preservation.
Which option you select will be based entirely on the power situation at your location and your goals. We set the UPS for extended runtime because our location is prone to brief but fairly frequent power outages during stormy weather.Beautifulsoup attribute
As such, we want the machine to keep running while we work through those sporadic minute power outages. The Voltage tab is oddly non-interactive.
The final tab is the Self-Test. You should be running the self-test at least once a month. When you run the self-test, the UPS unit cuts the wall current and performs a 10 second or so diagnostic test to confirm that everything inside the unit circuits, battery pack, etc. Have a pressing question about scheduling, battery backups, or other power management concerns?

Windows Mac iPhone Android.I have a situation where my UPS shuts down my Server correctly when there is low battery power, but not my Virtual Machine. Therefore, under Critical Battery action under my power plan under Power OptionsI have set server to shutdown. During a power outage last night, I saw that via event manager, Event IDs 13 and that the physical server was shut down properly gracefully.
On startup, no indication or prompts that the sever was shutdown unexpectedly. However, this unexpected shutdown notification happens on my VM. Event Manager in the VM shows no indication of a shutdown being initiated. I've even veirifed that Hyper V integration services is already running installed, running and is current on the VM. The microsoft hypervisor should save the virtual state before the host shutdown, so it might be worth looking at the event logs to see what has occurred.
Check both host and guest operating systems. If the guest operating systems are trying to shutdown but are taking too long the host maybe forcing the service to quit? Looking at another post with a similar question, the following site was listed with some scripting that may be of some use. What I normally do for my customers with multiple hosts is to install one UPS with a management card and then use the Network Shutdown software provided by the manufacturer on each host.
Don't have to worry about connecting via USB and all that. Hi Patricia, great work from APC on the forums as usual.
Looking forward to your response. I did some digging and it looks like there is quite a bit of information online about using apcupsd with Hyper-V. We did not create apcupsd and we do not support it; however, you may find information on controlling Hyper-V shutdown with a Back-UPS using apcupsd by searching for apcupsd and Hyper-V.

Much to my surprise I found that the single server being protected reported in the event logs that it didn't shut down gracefully. I went into PC Business Ed to check the configuration but I can't make heads or tails of the options.
I can't seem to find it anywhere and I've gone through the KB etc and all I can seem to find is info on network shutdown. Does anyone recall the KB article I saw or can someone post up a link to configuring graceful shutdown for a UPS protecting a single machine?
Thanks very much! OK, so just so that we're clear Good to know that APC has yet to create a document explaining the shutdown stages of their products during a power failure Maybe it's just me but I'm no longer sure that I picked a Winna Hi Winna :- I'm using Business Edition version 9. I use the web browser on that machine to access the settings. I'm pretty sure APC has several documents about configuring graceful shutdown - I just can't seem to find the KB article that explained the process in more detail or the steps the unit takes during shutdown and how to configure when it takes them.
That's why the KB article I originally used as a reference for configuring the unit was so helpful. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find anything in the KB other then a million articles on configuring network shutdown. If that seems harsh it's because I know for a fact that over the years volumes of information have been generated by APC with respect to configuring graceful shutdown and the understanding of it.
So, just so we can be clear, APC has no information at all about configuring graceful server shutdown parameters and the company's position is that we should just choose the defaults because that's good enough for all servers no matter the work load or configuration? That's OK - I appreciate the help that you've tried to provide. I was just advised to look into Eaton - I haven't seen their products in some time but I suspect it would be easier to just change out the APC unit then to spend more time trying and find information on configuring a graceful server shutdown from APC.

Worked great, for years. Power goes out, software triggers graceful shutdown.
APC Smart-UPS Power Backup & Graceful Shutdown
Data protected, safe. Also works. But what about a better way? Sounds interesting? Hey, look on the bright side, at least you have an article to read and a video to watch, while you wait. So, what's the other catch? Well, here's what CyberPower support has to say. But hey, if it works, why would you need support?
Remember, this is a home or lab we're talking about, so if that's acceptable risk for your application, read onward.
It's just me sharing an affordable option, a particular combo of hardware and software that works well for my needs. And during this long journey, I accidentally surfaced some bugs with their other versions of software. For example, PowerPanel Business Edition 2. All the other minor issues I discovered, I took the time to report, and may be fixed on a best-effort basis.
Remember, I don't have any official support either. For example, the web view of the appliance shows "0 Watts", but not a big deal, given the load percentage still shows, as pictured below. And remember, I can always check on the LCD on the front of the device, where watts can be displayed with a single button tap, seen here.
I began my yearning for an elegant, easy-to-set-up, robust, and automatic way to shutdown ESXi during power outages way back in the spring of Especially since poking around their site seemed to indicate some sort of VMware support. And I quickly became fond of the easy to use, always available even if the PC is not LCD display, with the simple way to mute alarms, described and partially demonstrated here.

And the UPSs batteries are replaceable. My efforts at ESXi shutdown have mostly been around failed tests of a variety of scripting techniques that I didn't particularly enjoy trying to get working, under a wide variety of OSs.
Lots of scripting prerequisites to install as well. Surprise gotchas like "doesn't work with free Hypervisor, because it relies on vCLI. Basically, I had stumbled over numerous barriers that I really felt weren't worth sharing, as they were so complex and problematic, that I knew the likelihood of folks actually doing this sort of thing for themselves was slim.
There was also the very real potential price issues, given VMware compatibility of UPSs tends to be priced as an "enterprise" feature. All I really wanted was something far simpler. Ideally easier than existing vCLI techniques that won't work with the free Hypervisordescribed here: www. So I'm very happy to have found a free way to do this that doesn't take long to implement. I used a fresh copy of ESXi 5.
Retesting with the free Hypervisor license mode will be next, since I don't yet know anything about how this CyberPower solution is "talking" to the ESXi host.
But some tests so far with vMA have revealed some difficulties there, particularly surrounding firewall config for email alerting. So for now, I'm going with the simplest and perhaps most robust approach. I may wind up just sticking with it, since it apparently seems to work so well.
You may too, once you see it's not difficult to set up and test.UPS power protection using Eaton Intelligent Power Protection enhances graceful physical system shutdown during power events.
Eaton Intelligent Power Protector joins the UPS makers management suite to extend graceful shutdown of physical host systems including those hosting VMware virtual machines. But only if your organization uses Eaton UPS hardware with specific controller cards. IPP has every appearance of being built from modules pulled out of IPM to such an extent that the two products, although available as a suite, cannot be run on the same system.
IT managers who used Eaton's Netwatch product should also have no trouble implementing the graceful shutdown policies provided in IPP. I also installed Eaton's management software along with a plug-in for vCenter 4 on the vCenter server. While it is possible to change these credentials using management tools from Eaton there is a bit of variety between the UPS management cards such that passwords are sometimes advised and sometimes mandatory.
Keeping track of machine and user credentials will be a non-trivial task for IT managers who are widely install Eaton UPS systems. IPP controls local computer shutdown scenarios using timers that control duration and shutdown type, such as hibernation. There is enough flexibility in the shutdown configuration policy module to handle nearly every contingency. Systems can be put into hibernation mode, shutdown entirely or controlled with a shutdown script to perform custom actions.
The shutdown module also controls the outlet action so that I was able to turn the outlet off after a power event or leave it active so that connected systems would come back on when utility power was restored. An APC brand UPS will provide the best compatibility, other brands can often be made to work, but some features may not be available.
For sizing, there is a minimum size to run the server, which will often only provide a few minutes of runtime less than 10and then there is sizing for a specified time frame.
Not really recommended however, as many times there will be things that need to be watched as a server comes back up, just to verify that there are no issues that need to be dealt with. Also, there is the issue of battery recharge times. How to configure APC PowerChute Network Shutdown for VMware.
The last thing you want to happen is a failure of the battery backup right in the middle of startup because the power went back out again. Usually you would want to confirm the power is stable with no further chance of interruption for the foreseeable future before you power the server back up.
And if automatic restarting is a possible issue, that's not a big deal. What I want is a clean shutdown so that the array is preserved and the data is saved. All that is required is to go into the settings and tell it the particulars of the connection. Many Cyberpower UPS models work for automatic shutdown, but don't play well with the option to shut down the UPS after the server is shut down.
Automatic restart is a complicated issue. If everything is working right and the power stays on after returning, then everything works fine. The issue is when unexpected things happen, it can cause problems.
Better to wait and be present to ensure everything is ok. When the UPS shuts down the unRAID system, is this a "clean" shutdown, or does it have to perform the 12 hour parity check on the array? The shutdown script does its absolute best to get a clean shutdown. However, in some rare cases, it may not be able to successfully kill all the running bits before the battery runs out. Best practice would be to ensure as many services as possible shut themselves down cleanly so unraid doesn't have to force kill them.
VM's for instance, can have the apcupsd software running on them as well, and take the cue from the unraid master apcupsd install that the power has failed, and shutdown ASAP, before unraid has to stop them.
