While Sea of Thieves offers some nice sea shanties by way of the concertina and hurdy-gurdy, some folks may be looking for a little more to lighten the mood. Obviously, the optimal solution would be for your 4-man outfit to begin signing over voice chat, but when that's not an option, you need a killer playlist to get the party started.
This one is a no-brainer. This tune has accompanied the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at various Disney parks. When you think of pirate jams, this is the first that comes to mind. While it began life as a traditional folks song from the Bahamas, it was popularized by the Beach Boys in as the lead single from their album, Pet Sounds.Canon pixma orange light flashing 5 times
The song tells the tale of a group on a small boat. This group, like a pack or pirates, spends a significant amount of time getting sloshed. Knowing the Beach Boys, the word trip likely had double meaning. One being the voyage and the other clearly being all the acid the boys were dropping in the 60s. This song was so big, it is credited with being the birth of yacht rock, also known as adult soft-rock.
Well-known to younger audiences due to its inclusion in the Spongebob Squarepants movie, Ocean Man is loaded with sea-themed lyrics. It continues to be used in popular media and commercials to this day. I just love billy Ocean. If you have a problem with it, write something mean in the comments.
Like Clockwork. It tells the story of someone who had a falling out with a significant other and chooses to drown their sorrows in the bottle in an attempt to forget it ever happened.
It is about a girl who wrote to Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo from Japan while Cuomo was going through a bout of depression.
Like what was done with emotes, allowing shantys to be purchased from the store and added to a wheel. It would be great if we could use that wheel Like selecting an emote or chat phrase to choose what song we wanted to be played on the equipped instrument. I think this would be a new great addition to the customisation in this game. So, for that reason, we're not likely to see more shanties unless the game is somehow improved or expanded upon as a whole.
It would be nice to have though, especially if you could directly choose your shanty like with the emotes. Secondly, what about pirates that don't purchase these new shanties? Could they still play along, or no? I think that's a very pertinent question that needs answering. I think there is a way around the memory issue, but it would not fit with how previous shanties were made, and may impact quality.
Since most of the music in SoT is composed with sampled instruments, shanties included, instead of using one big audio file for every tune and instrument they could make MIDI tracks with high quality samples.
Banjo-Kazooie used the same gimmick to fit a lot of different music in each level while still sounding awesome. If I'm not mistaken, Robin Beanland is the composer for Sea of Thieves, and he too used to change tracks on the fly with smart usage of samples, especially during the N64 era first example that comes to mind is the dynamic music in Conker's Bad Fur Day.
It would be a great addition and can sound every bit as faithful as the actual recorded tracks, if done right. I wish we could have more but like Galactic-Geek said I think it could be a memory issue. Also if Rare did find this important enough to find a memory work around I do not think they should be made for purchase. I would also like to select which shanties we play. Play Now. Following on from my last postI wanted to talk about shanties and where I think they may be going in the future! And, one thing that not many people know, we have another confirmed instrument available on release day; Behold, The Fiddle! The piece 'Bosun Bill' plays for the first 5 seconds and you can hear the two instruments we're familiar with in the game - Hurdy-Gurdy and Concertina - However I was caught by the sound of a more prominent bassline than in game so there's always a possibility of a bass-instrument.
I have, however, seen a Lute in-game…. Maybe you hold LT whilst playing your instruments? I also noticed NPCs around the outposts humming shanties!
Which instruments would you love to bring aboard for your trips across the seas? You can see some instruments in this T-shirt. A lute and Fiddle, that's a very interesting thing to see.
It means that Rare see it as a fitting instrument for the Sea of Thieves world, so we'll see what happens! Ps: was looking for a list of instruments used in the GAoP, but without success. Any ideas of all instruments? Did they have flute, lute, cello, banjo or guitar? I always thought they had mandolin, but seen it appeared much later lol. Looking forward to the fiddle :D. Great investigation though on the original post!
Vocals would be a pretty great addition too. Or maybe just a kind of humming along? It's never been seen before and even the thing that can't be talked about here but happens every time the beta client gets updated, has found zero mention of a fiddle.
Until they talk about it officially being in the game I'm going to have to put it in the speculated column. But there is one at the beginning of this video And I'm still going to stand on the side of it being unsure since this was almost 2 years ago.
We've also seen art for rowboats and many other things that we've never officially had word about either so again, going to stay on the side of maybe but maybe not when it comes to the Fiddle. I guess we won't know until release! LimpLegLenny Personally I'd love to sea get it the penny whistle or flute somewhere down the line.Players are able to use instruments to play shanties together. If a player is already playing a shanty, other players can join in with their instruments and add to the song.
Multiple players on the same team playing instruments in the vicinity will sync their playing automatically. Players in an intoxicated state from drinking Grog will play out-of-tune until they become sober. Snakes can be charmed into a trance by playing nearby, preventing them from attacking. Our ship, she dreams Of wind in her sails, Of wind in her sails unfurled. And shining as we cross the sea, We cross the sea for home. And set our eyes on distant shores With wind in her sails again.
When we have the wind in our sails. Bosun Bill was known throughout the port, a truly dreadful pirate who was always getting caught, not one scheme for stealing he could hatch cause someone would spot the treasure he'd got and Bill they'd snatch!
Bosun Bill set out to find a crew, but everyone he asked replied, "I'll never sail with you! Bosun Bill stuffed treasure into his sack he loaded up the boat, but heard a mighty crack.
Bosun Bill let out a terrible curse. Pirate provocateour! Now is he dead? The in-game Shanty does not seem to have any known lyrics. This shanty was added during the Hungering Deep event was used during the event to "summon the megalodon". It currently doesn't have any known lyrics.
Like the other Shanties, the lyrics of Oh Hail, the Pirate Lord can be read from a Journal found on Islandshowever this Shanty does not yet have a performable musical version in-game. Beyond the ocean, rocks and mist, lies a secret none can tell. Filled with booty, grog and reminisce, its my crews true place to dwell. Oh where will I find a haven safe to stash my hoard?
Hush now, you sea urchin! Just take it to the Lord! He waits amongst a pile of gold. He wants them chests, unearthed, found and stole. Just give em' up and then you'll see Pirate Legend, maketh thee. Now set sail for destiny!T he life of the shanty is a fascinating example of how elements of a music genre can evolve to match its environment. The exact origin of the shanty may not be known, but what is certain is that it was a product of its circumstances. It first appeared as a distinctive song type in the 15th century, aboard the sailing ships of Europe, where the working song ensured that sailors could coordinate to complete physically intensive tasks, such as hoisting the sails for departure.
This was also the period when squared sailed vessels supplanted the oared galley as the premiere form of waterborne transport.
The first shanty attested in print appears in The Complaynt of Scotland froma Scottish book published during the conflict of the Rough Wooing. The text describes how, as the sailors started to haul up the anchor, they sang the following shanty:. Haill all and ane, hail all and ane; Hail him up til us, hail him up til us.
The location of the anchor is addressed by the singer throughout and the calls are intended to encourage the sailors. The 16th century was also the period of expansion for the Spanish colonial empire and the growth of its nautical influence, which in turn intensified the spread of the language. The composers of these tunes usually sought to capitalise on notable naval events, such as battles, and they were rushed out to market as quickly as possible.
The heyday of the shanty would be the 19th century, when sailing ships were forced to match the pace of steam powered vessels; as a result the songs were more important than ever because it could get every ounce of power out of a crew. This century was also a period when the opportunities for African American sailors increased and the mix of songs mirrored the multicultural nature of the crews.
Often a song would be inspired when a tune was overheard while a crew was in a foreign port, which added to the eclectic nature of these songs. Songs would be exchanged across cultural lines, even though the words may not have been intelligible to the lender, it would be sung if the tune was infectious.
This would lead to some shanties containing words with no real meaning because it had been misheard or derived from another context. As the shanty evolved during the 19th century, the songs became more specialized, to fit in with specific tasks: the two main types being hauling or heaving songs. Hauling songs had to coordinate sporadic actions, such as hoisting the topsail. A good hauling song would ensure that everyone in the work team would pull the rope at the same time and would also contain pauses for workers to catch their breaths.Absences in sap hr
Hauling songs could be further subdivided: there were halyard songs otherwise known as long-drag songsshort drag songs and pumping songs. Heaving songs, on the other hand, would be sung while at the capstan, a device that raised the anchor of a ship. A slow, steady beat was thus an important feature for this arduous task.
A major attraction of shanties were the morale lifting aspect of the ditties; they could make time go faster when the crew were busy with manual tasks and could inject humour into an otherwise dull day. A shantyman with an encyclopaedic knowledge and the ability to improvise was, as a result, a valuable asset on a ship and they were treated as such — they enjoyed lighter duties and could even be rewarded with extra rum. In their duties, they served as collectors of songs, and their knowledge were deemed to be as good as a number of extra hands on deck.
I screen shorted them today in the book but didn't get to read them. I wrote them a long time ago. Love your work though. Believe there was a title to the book but I was rushing and forgot to screenshot that. May have been Becalmed or Becalmed 2. Hope you enjoy. Imgur Imgur Imgur Imgur Imgur. Tales from the Sea of Thieves. Great read actually. I found these lyrics in a Journal while rummaging around Sunken Grove, and when my friend noticed it was labeled "Becalmed" I instantly recognized the song and pulled out my Hurdy Gurdy to play it.
And lord, would you believe the tear inducing, pure revelry and awe I felt playing, and singing these lyrics not having known they'd existed for a song I'd already learned to love. Easily one of the most awe-inspiring moments in my entirety of the Sea of Thieves experience; stumbling upon lost lyrics to a song many recognize but don't really know.
I truly believe I'd found treasure, bravo dude! Play Now. Account Not logged in yet? You're missing out! This topic has been deleted. Only users with topic management privileges can see it.
